Genital Prolapse

Genital Prolapse

Genital prolapse is a common reproductive disorder in cattle. It is considered an emergency condition that should be managed immediately to avoid complications.

Genital prolapse is most commonly reported in dairy cattle. It is defined as the inside-out protrusion of one or more urogenital structures (bladder, uterus and vagina) from their normal anatomical position through the genital (vaginal) opening. Among all prolapses, uterine and vaginal prolapses are frequently observed in cows.

Uterine prolapse in cows and buffaloes is a usual outcome of post-partum complications that needs quick attention.

Vaginal prolapse most commonly occurs in the last trimester of pregnancy when placental oestrogen production increases.

Management of Prolapse

The major reasons for repeat breeding are:

  • The animal should be appropriately restrained to avoid trauma, followed by cleansing of the exposed endometrium, preferably with hypertonic or antiseptic solutions, i.e. KMNO4 (1:1000)
  • Uterine mass should be lifted to allow urination, as, during prolapse, the urethra remains at an acute angle that prevents urination
  • The uterine mass can be manually repositioned by gentle pushing with a fisted hand, simultaneously elevating the mass using the palm of the other hand
